Juventus midfielder, Paul Pogba, has received a four-year suspension from football due to doping.
Pogba’s positive test was disclosed in September 2023, after undergoing an examination during Juventus’ match against Udinese a month ago. Despite not playing in the Serie A game, Pogba was on Juve’s bench.
Upon learning of his positive doping test, the France international requested a counter-analysis, which also confirmed the presence of banned substances.
Italy’s anti-doping prosecutors sought the maximum penalty of a four-year ban for Pogba, who tested positive for testosterone.
Rather than opting for a plea bargain with Italy’s anti-doping agency, the former Manchester United midfielder chose to have his case heard before the country’s anti-doping court.
At 30 years old, the four-year ban effectively concludes Pogba’s professional career, although there remains the possibility of appealing the sentence.
Initially, it was proposed that Pogba could argue lack of intentionality in his actions as a defense, leaving open the possibility that the outcome of the appeal could change.
Since the announcement of his positive test in September, Pogba has not made any appearances for Juventus.
