Former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has announced plans to implement cost-saving measures by discontinuing utility payments for government officials if elected president in the upcoming elections.

Mr. Mahama’s proposed measures include ending free DSTV subscriptions, utility bill payments, and fuel allowances for government officials to alleviate the financial burden on the economy.

During a meeting with the EU Ambassador to Ghana, the NDC’s 2024 presidential candidate emphasized that these expenses significantly strain the economy and should be eliminated.

Mahama believes that government officials should bear the cost of their utility services just like any other Ghanaian.

“We will stop covering utility bills, fuel, DSTV, and similar expenses as conditions of service for top government officials, directors, and the political class. We believe that individuals should be responsible for their own electricity and water bills, as every other Ghanaian does.

“Unless a government vehicle is used or the official is on a government assignment, officials should pay for their own fuel if they are using their personal cars. Therefore, we will discontinue these payments,” he stated.
