Ghanaian musician Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known as Guru, has won the University of Ghana’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidential election.
This victory comes after weeks of intense campaigning, which were marked by disqualifications, legal disputes, and various challenges.
Guru, famous for his hit song ‘Lapaz Toyota,’ along with his running mate Jeffery Adu-Yeboah, secured 50.7% of the votes, totaling 9,455. The election saw a turnout of 18,659 voters.
Just a week before the polls, the school’s Appeals Board unanimously reversed Guru’s disqualification, which was based on his non-resident student status.
The SRC had argued that both Guru and another candidate did not meet the eligibility criteria for the election. However, after a legal battle, the judicial board upheld the decision that the grounds for disqualification were valid, meaning Guru could not participate.
In response, the Vice Dean of Student Affairs intervened, directing that the names of both disqualified candidates and their running mates be included on the ballot for the presidential race. A letter dated September 15, 2024, instructed the school’s Electoral Commission to proceed with balloting for all vetted candidates and communicate this to them.
The election proceeded as scheduled, with Guru and his running mate receiving 50.7% of the vote. They are now set to lead the SRC for the 2024/25 academic year.
