Ghana’s economy: Minority says energy sector debt is top risk

Listen to this article

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader in Parliament, emphasized that the energy sector’s debt is the most significant threat to the nation’s economy. Speaking during the State of the Nation Address (SONA) in parliament on Monday, he pointed out that the current government, led by Akufo Addo/Bawumia, has created a financial crisis and chaos in the power sector. Dr. Forson noted that the sizeable revenues from the Energy Sector Levies Act (ESLA), intended by President John Mahama to settle energy sector debts, have been misused.

He highlighted that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration is indebted to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) with an excess of $1.5 billion. According to Dr. Forson, the government is adopting a short-term approach, passing on the burden to the next NDC government, and failing to address the substantial debt to IPPs.
