The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has promptly relieved Black Stars coach, Chris Hughton, of his duties following the team’s premature exit from the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON). The decision, effective immediately, comes in the aftermath of the Black Stars’ unsuccessful campaign, culminating in an early departure from the tournament.
Furthermore, the GFA Executive Council has made the consequential choice to disband the entire technical team associated with the senior national squad. The dissolution reflects a comprehensive reevaluation of the coaching setup in light of the team’s underwhelming performance.
In an official statement, the GFA announced its intention to outline a roadmap for the future trajectory of the Black Stars in the coming days. This strategic plan is anticipated to address the restructuring of the coaching staff and chart a course for the national team’s rejuvenation.
The decisive moment leading to Hughton’s dismissal occurred during the crucial final Group B encounter against Mozambique. The Black Stars, vying for a win to secure advancement to the Round of 16, found themselves in a precarious position. Despite initially holding a two-goal lead in the 90th minute, the team conceded two late goals, resulting in a 2-2 draw with Os Mambas.
This draw, following a prior 2-1 defeat against Cape Verde in the opening match and a 2-2 draw against Egypt in the second fixture, meant Ghana fell short of automatic qualification to the knockout stage of the tournament. The disappointing series of results prompted swift action from the GFA, signaling a need for a fresh approach to steer the Black Stars toward future success.
The Ghanaian football community now awaits the forthcoming roadmap from the GFA, which is poised to provide insights into the envisioned changes and strategic initiatives intended to propel the Black Stars into a new era of competitiveness on the continental stage.
