The Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana have jointly announced a 30 percent hike in transport fares, effective March 7, 2024.
In a joint press release, the two organizations stated that the decision to raise fares comes as a result of the government’s failure to address their grievances.
“As representatives of drivers’ associations, we are dismayed by the leadership’s inability to tackle our concerns and implement fare adjustments to offset the rising operational expenses. The continual surge in fuel prices has significantly impacted our livelihoods, leading to financial strains and operational difficulties,” the release reads.
The full statement issued by the Regional Chairmen of both associations highlights their disappointment in the leadership’s inaction despite the escalating fuel costs. They stress the need for fare adjustments to ensure the sustainability of the transportation sector and maintain service quality for the public.
Expressing their frustration with the government’s lack of response to the critical issue, the Regional executives emphasize the necessity of fare increments to cope with escalating operational expenses.
The statement concludes with a call for constructive dialogue between the government, relevant authorities, and the sector’s leaders to address the challenges and implement fare adjustments reflective of the current economic conditions.
