Nigerian sensation Davido recently expressed his preference for categorizing his music within the Afrofusion genre rather than Afrobeats.
Historically, the iconic Fela Kuti pioneered the genre known as afrobeat. However, today, African music is commonly labeled as Afrobeats, encompassing various styles regardless of the artist’s individual sound.
Even artists singing pure R&B akin to SZA or Summer Walker, or rappers with a Drake-like flow, are often classified under Afrobeats.
However, during an interview with the Business Untitled Podcast, the acclaimed artist distanced himself from the Afrobeats label.
Davido highlighted that the UK was among the first to embrace African music outside of the continent, terming it Afrobeats. He acknowledged the need for a genre classification but prefers to describe his music as Afrofusion, recognizing the lengthy journey African music took to gain mainstream recognition.
In recent months, other prominent artists like Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Fireboy DML have also disassociated themselves from the Afrobeats genre, considering it irrelevant to their musical styles.
