Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, the former Environment Minister, has informed Parliament that Henry Kwabena Kokofu, the Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is diligently working to secure World Bank funding for the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage.

Members of Parliament representing the affected constituencies have expressed frustration over the government’s perceived inaction, as many victims continue to reside in tents while awaiting resettlement and compensation.

During his address in Parliament, the former Minister disclosed that Henry Kwabena Kokofu is actively engaged in the process of depositing Ghana’s documentation to secure the necessary funding.

“As of now, regarding the Akosombo Spillage, for instance, we are optimistic about qualifying for assistance under loss and damage. Mr. Kokofu, in his role as the Executive Director of the EPA, is exerting considerable effort to ensure the submission of our documentation, detailing the status of loss and damage, to the World Bank. Discussions pertaining to the disbursement process, including adherence to all relevant rules and regulations, are currently underway. We are confident in our eligibility,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Parliament is presently deliberating the Environmental Protection Bill, which aims to tackle environmental challenges and empower the Environmental Protection Agency to effectively address emerging environmental issues. The bill has successfully advanced through the second reading stage.
